Presenteeism: the new way to waste money

While Quebec employers are just beginning to consider absenteeism as an important cost, a new problem arises: presenteeism.

A few examples would be the weeks preceding a burnout, a comeback from a long-term disability that was rushed, or simply an employee that is attending work while sick. Presenteeism is a major factor in loss of productivity not only for the employee but also for the entire team. This adds to the risk of spreading the disease.

Presenteeism and attendance policy

Last year, an important American survey revealed that 76% of workers attended work while ill, at one point or another. The same survey also mentioned that only 11% of their bosses discouraged them to show up to work.

To better manage absenteeism, a clear attendance policy is a must. Your employees must know what to do when ill.

It has also been proven that the faster long-term illnesses such as burnouts are dealt with, the shorter the absence. And so it appears that, for everyone’s benefit, it is simply unnecessary to let any kind of illness situation drag on unattended…
